Le parc national se trouve du côté ouest des Southern Alps. Juste de l’autre côté de cette chaîne de montagnes se trouve le Aoraki-Mount Cook National Park où nous étions il y a peu. 140 glaciers sont concentrés sur cette zone de 200km2.
The national park is located in the western side of the Southern Alps. Across these mountains lays the Aoraki-Mount Cook National Park that we have recently visited. 140 glaciers are gathered in this 200km² area.
Dans le Westland Tai Poutini National Park, les glaciers les plus accessibles sont le Fox Glacier et le Franz Josef Glacier.

Il est très impressionnant, et triste, de constater la vitesse à laquelle les glaciers fondent. Au début du 20e siècle, ils occupaient toute la vallée jusqu'au sommet des falaises. Leur recul entre deux périodes glacières est un phénomène naturel mais celui ci est considérablement accéléré par le réchauffement climatique. Ils viendront malheureusement à disparaître.
It is very amazing, and sad, to see how fast the glaciers are melting. At the beginning of the 20th century, they occupied the whole valley up to the cliff tops. Their recessing between two ice ages is a natural phenomenon but this is highly accelerated by global warming. They will eventually disappear.
Aujourd'hui, nous avons visité les environs du Fox Glacier. La marche d’approche jusqu’au glacier est assez courte et elle permet d’en avoir un bel aperçu. Nous avons également fait une balade à travers la forêt jusqu’à un point de vue qui nous a permis de l’admirer de haut.
Today, we visited the surroundings of the Fox Glacier. The approaching walk to the glacier is quite short and allows a nice overview. We also strolled through the forest to a lookout providing a stunning view from above.
Dans l’après-midi, nous avons fait le tour du Lake Matheson sur lequel les montagnes se reflètent par temps clair. Le ciel était malheureusement un peu couvert donc nous n’avons pas pu en profiter pleinement mais le lac était joli.
In the afternoon, we walked around Lake Matheson which reflects the mountains when the weather is fine enough. Unfortunately the sky was overcast, so we could not fully enjoy the sight.
