2010/12/05 au 11 : Vi à Canberra

Ça devient sérieux : je suis allée à Canberra pour la conférence annuelle de l'Ecological Society of Australia.

It's getting serious : I've been to Canberra for the annual conference of the Ecological Society of Australia.

Au départ, je devais présenter un poster et faire une courte intervention de 3 minutes. Claire, lors de son séjour chez Jan, m'a aidée à réaliser le poster, elle a fait des études de communication visuelle,. Je l'ai envoyé au secrétariat de la conférence à la date indiquée et apparemment, il a fait impression : j'ai a été promue à une présentation de 15 minutes dans une session thématique intitulée 'Biodiversity conservation in agricultural landscapes: is it really worth the effort?'.

I had to make a poster presentation and a speed talk. I made the poster and sent it to the conference secretariat and they upgraded me to a 15 minute talk in a symposium called 'Biodiversity conservation in agricultural landscapes: is it really worth the effort?'.

J'étais contente mais un peu déçue pour mon poster ! J'ai du rédiger une présentation plus longue et faire un Powerpoint en vitesse.

I was happy but a bit sad for my poster !

Bref, la semaine s'est très bien passée. La conférence était extrêmement intéressante et enrichissante, l'association fêtait ses 50 ans et elle a battu des records de participation avec 829 inscrits.

I spent a good week there. The conference was extremely interesting and rewarding, the association was celebrating its 50th birthday and records of assistance were bitten with 829 participants.

Je suis intervenue dans le grand amphithéâtre le mardi à 16h. J'avais un peu les chocottes mais au moment de parler, j'étais calme et tout s'est bien déroulé.

I intervened in the main theatre on Tuesday at 4pm. I had the willies beforehand but when my turn came, I was relaxed.

J'étais logée par Pam, la tante d'Amanda. Cela m'a bien aidée car elle ma chouchoutée ! Elle m'a cuisiné de bons petits plats et m'a fait visiter Canberra.

I stayed at Pam's, Amanda's aunt. It helped me a lot as she really pampered me ! She cooked me good food and took me to visit Canberra.

Alors que l'Australie Occidentale connaît des records de chaleur et de sécheresse, l'est du continent doit faire face à de nombreuses inondations. Il a plu à Canberra mais il n'y a pas eu de dégâts. Par contre, certaines villes des environs ont été totalement inondées. De quoi apporter de l'eau au moulin des conversations de la conférence ...

When Western Australia knows heat and drought records, the east of the continent had to face numerous floods. It rained in Canberra but there were no damages. Enough to bring water to the mill of the conference conversations ...

La différence est frappante, Canberra est luxuriante. Il y a une réserve naturelle près de chez Pat où j'allais marcher le soir, l'herbe est haute et verte, il y a des fleurs sauvages et des marres.

The difference is great, Canberra is lush. There's a natural reserve close to Pat's where I was going for a walk in the evening, the grass is high and green and there are wild flowers and ponds.
