Avondale Park

Je suis donc à la ferme de la famille aborigène avec laquelle je suis en contact pour mes recherches. Ils ne sont pas là en ce moment car ils résident à Perth et Northam mais ça me sert de base pour développer mes contacts et explorer la région.

I am staying at the farm owned by the Aboriginal family I’m in contact with for my researches. They are not there at the moment as they live in Perth and Northam but it allows me to develop my contacts and explore the area.

La Wheatbelt a été tellement défrichée pour la culture des céréales et l’élevage des moutons qu’elle connaît désormais de graves problèmes environnementaux : salinité, érosion, pollution des sols et des cours d’eau, sécheresse etc etc.

The Wheatbelt was so much cleared for cropping and sheep grazing that nowadays people start facing huge environmental problems : salinity, erosion, soil and watercourses pollution, drought etc etc.

La famille avec laquelle je travaille a une approche différente de l’agriculture qui vise à résoudre certains de ces problèmes. Elle a planté des bois de santal endémiques à la région pour le commerce des noix qui sont très recherchées par les industries pharmaceutiques et cosmétiques. Elle a également replanté des arbres natifs sur une partie de la propriété pour ensuite développer une activité touristique autour de la nourriture et la médecine du bush et bénéficier des compensations carbone. Elle loue encore certaines parcelles à d’autres fermiers afin d’assurer un revenu stable pour les premières années mais souhaite à terme restaurer la végétation sur l’ensemble de la propriété.

The family whom I’m working with has a different approach to agriculture to try and tackle some of these problems. They’ve planted sandalwoods along the river for the commercialization of the nuts in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. They also have revegetated part of the property with native trees to later develop a touristic venture around bush food and bush medicine and maybe get an income from carbon trading. They still lease some acres for grazing and cropping as they need a stable income for the first years.

Malheureusement, très peu d’Aborigènes ont accès à la terre et à la gestion des espaces naturels. Créer des emplois et des opportunités dans ce domaine central à leur mode de vie et croyances traditionnelles serait pourtant un moyen efficace de combler leur désavantage et faire un pas vers la réconciliation car Healthy Country = Healthy People.

Unfortunately, a few Aborigines have access to land and natural resources management. Creating jobs and opportunities in this area so central to their traditional way of life and beliefs would be an efficient way to decrease their disadvantage, restore their self-esteem and make a step towards reconciliation. They are deeply convinced that Healthy Country = Healthy People.
